MARIETTA, GA - October 1993 - In a cedar house on a heavily wooded lot in suburban Atlanta, Chris Kearney struggled over a name for his side business.
          Most of Kearney's side work came from referrals or relationships he'd built since 1987. People knew him as "Chris". But he had to come up with a name. He had to print something on the corporate checks.
         Kearney wanted something distinctive. He didn't care for the pretentious, pseudo-latin names like Solutia, Integra, Performa, or Inconsequentia. He thought about CJK Consulting, Kearney Consulting, and so on. None of the names appealed to him.
          At last, when drawing up articles of incorporation, Kearney decided to have some fun with it. He chose Couch Slug Consulting because it sounded good at the time. It rolled off the tongue. A brief, concise, pronounceable name. After all, how many high tech companies have non-acronym, plain English, monosyllabic names?
          To this day, the name is an asset. "People always ask me to repeat the company name before putting me on hold," says Kearney. "In fact, I am asked to repeat my company name an average of three times during every business meeting. It gets noticed." And the name is a favorite for the A/P folks who process Couch Slugs plaid upholstered invoices. "But in the end, it's the quality of work that matters."

The Logo. The Couch Slug logo was taken from a poster promoting a live appearance of The Couch Slugs (the band). The original photograph (taken by Andrea Hines) is of Clevelander Greg Shackelton lying beneath a plaid, solid foam couch/pullout bed. Like a slug, the couch had no skeletal structure. It was just that yellow foam stuff wrapped in plaid. Nice. The all-foam couch was quickly adopted as a band logo, because it had just as much structure.
         After the Company was founded in 1993, the couch photo was scanned and adopted as a company logo on the Couch Slug website. Then in 1998, the logo was altered and re-colored for the company letterhead and business cards.
